Sometimes Mexicans are known for their warmth and friendly disposition. I got a reminder of this the other day in a very strange way.
Our car needed to be jump started because it ran out of battery (boyfriend left the stereo on trying to fix it :/ ) we called his brothers and of course they came to the rescue, luckily they live close enough and football wasn't on TV.
While we sat outside waiting with the car's hood open one of our neighbors got home, he asked what happened and was polite, gave us "advice" on the battery (which boyfriend already knew) wished us luck and went on his way. Like a reflex I thought "that was it?"
Suddenly it came to my mind that back home any neighbor or sometimes a stranger will lend you a hand, and won't rest until they make sure you are set, sometimes you don't even ask for help, you are in an awkward situation where you are letting a stranger help you because it's what you do.
On the other hand, the nice lady that lives across the hall went on a trip, she is going to be away for 2 whole weeks, she was kind enough to knock on our door, let us know when she gets back and even offered us her morning paper (I'm kind of guessing we are just cleaning it up lol). I have to say she has been a very nice neighbor so far. I was so surprised she knocked on the door to let us know she was going away I didn't even ask where she was going :( , which was boyfriend's first question when I told him.
In Mexico unless you are super close to your neighbor it's not common to let them know your whereabouts, when we go somewhere for a while, we are just gone!

I guess we just have different ways to show our friendliness.
No matter where you are there's a saying I heard once that I think it's very true "good neighbor, good friend". Usually the people that know how to get along with others around them turn out to be good at being friends.

Buen Vecino, Buen Amigo
Hay muchas cosas que podría escribir sobre los vecinos con los que tuve la suerte de crecer que ahora considero familia, pero todavía no es tiempo de sentir nostalgia.
A veces los mexicanos son considerados personas cálidas y amigables. Hace unos días recordé esto de una manera muy extraña.
Nuestro carro se quedó sin batería (porque mi novio dejo el estéreo prendido tratando de arreglarlo :/ ) llamamos a sus hermanos y por supuesto vinieron en nuestra ayuda, por suerte viven muy cerca y no había football americano en la tele.
Mientras esperábamos sentados con el cofre del carro abierto, uno de los vecinos llegó, claro que nos preguntó si todo estaba bien, nos "aconsejo" sobre la batería (lo cual mi novio ya sabía) nos deseo suerte y se metió a su casa. Por un momento pensé, "eso es todo?"
De repente vino a mi mente como en México cualquier vecino o a veces un extraño te dará una mano, y no te dejará ir hasta estar seguro que no necesitas nada más, a veces no pedirás la ayuda, solo te quedarás en una situación donde sólo tienes que dejarte recibir la ayuda porque es la costumbre.
Por otro lado, nuestra vecina (que es muy linda) salió de viaje y estará ausente dos semanas, ella fue lo suficientemente amable al dejarnos saber esto y ofrecernos su periódico de todos los días (que algo me dice solo estamos limpiando porque no hay quien lo haga jaja). Me sorprendió tanto que nos avisará que se va de viaje que ni siquiera le pregunté a donde iba :( y fue lo primero que mi novio me preguntó cuando le di la noticia.
En México a menos que seas muy cercano a tu vecino no es muy común avisar donde estarás, cuando nos vamos, solo nos vamos!
Supongo que son distintas maneras de demostrar nuestra amabilidad y amistad.
No importa donde estés hay un dicho que escuche una vez que creo es muy cierto "buen vecino, buen amigo". Usualmente la gente que sabe llevarse bien con los que le rodean resultan ser buenos amigos.
