Successful Mexicans in the USA: Alfonso Cuarón

I thought of this series of posts a while ago and the perfect way or person to launch it with, given the Oscar season and the fact that I liked Gravity (even though I'm seriously afraid of space) I think it would be an honor to start with Alfonso Cuarón.

I'm not super knowledgeable about the Mexican film industry because in all honesty I'm not a big fan, but I got to say every Mexican that thrives, succeeds and opens doors for others to follow is worth some admiration.

So here's what I've learned so far about the much talked Mr. Cuarón, he was born Alfonso Cuarón Orozco in November 28th, 1961 in Mexico City. He's a producer, writer, screen editor and very successful film director. It comes as no surprise that he could win an Oscar tonight since he's worked with stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke and Robert DeNiro.

He started filming when he was given a camera as a gift when he was just 12 years old. He studied Philosophy at The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and filmmaking at CUEC (University Center for Filmmaking Studies). He didn't finish his studies at CUEC, he dropped out of school after he didn't get permission to commercialize one of his films.

His film making career took off with his film Sólo con tu Pareja in 1991 (Only with your Partner in English though I don't know if there's an actual title) which he wrote with his brother Carlos and got him the attention of Hollywood.

Some of his most famous films are: 

A Little Princess (1995) which he decided to do instead of Addicted to Love with Meg Ryan and Mathew Broderick.

Great Expectations (1998) which didn't have the acceptance the studio expected, this kind of surprised me since I love that movie!

Y tu Mamá También (2001) starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, this movie got him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Script, and it is also his most iconic work to this day.

Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) JK Rowling actually suggested him based on his work on A Little Princess.

Children of Men (2006) starring Julianne Moore and Clive Owen, landing a nomination for an Oscar for writing and film editing.

Today nominated of an Oscar for Best Director for Gravity, success he shares with Sandra Bullock, he gets rewarded for his long career and hard work, as we seen all along this Award Season, from the Golden Globes to the BAFTAs.

Mexicans tend to say that we don't shine enough to cling from a single success that may be a fluke, I say, lets be proud of our own becoming universal and reminding us that success comes to the ones that work hard and Mexicans are included.

Win or lose, to me, Alfonso Cuaron's is a story of success worth sharing.

Pensé en hacer esta serie de posts hace un tiempo y cual sería la persona perfecta para empezarlos, aprovechando la temporada de Oscares y el hecho de que me gusto Gravedad (aunque el espacio me da pavor) creo que sería un honor empezar con Alfonso Cuarón.

No se mucho sobre cine mexicano porque honestamente no soy muy fan, pero he de decir que cualquier mexicano que triunfa, es reconocido y abre las puertas para otras personas detrás de ellos vale la pena admirar.

Así que esto es lo que he aprendido del Sr. Cuarón, nació Alfonso Cuarón Orozco en Noviembre 28 de 1961 en México D.F. Es productor, escritor, editor y un muy exitoso director. No me sorprende ya que ha trabajo con personas como Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke y Robert DeNiro.

Empezó a filmar cuando recibió de regalo una cámara a los 12 años. Estudió Filosofía en la Universidad Autónoma de México y Cinematografía en el Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos, dejó sus estudios porque no le dieron permiso de comercializar una de sus cintas.

Su carrera despegó con la película Sólo con tu Pareja en 1991, la cual escribió con su hermano Carlos y le gano la atención de Hollywood.

Algunas de sus películas más famosas son:

La Princesita (1995) la cual decidió hacer en lugar de Adictos al Amor con Meg Ryan y Mathew Broderick.

Grandes Esperanzas (1998) la cual no tuvo la aceptación que el estudio esperaba, lo cual me sorprende porque es una de mis películas favoritas.

Y tu Mamá También (2001) con Gael García Bernal y Diego Luna, esta película le gano una nominación al Premio de la Academia para Mejor Guión Original y es uno de sus trabajos más icónicos al día de hoy.

Harry Potter y el Prisionero de Azkaban (2004) JK Rowling fue quien lo sugirió para el trabajo basada en tu trabajo en La Princesita.

Los Hijos de Los Hombres (2006) con Julianne Moore y Clive Owen, recibiendo otra nominación al Oscar para Mejor Escritor y Mejor Edición.

Hoy, nominado para un Oscar para Mejor Director por Gravedad, éxito que comparte con Sandra Bullock, es recompensado por su larga carrera y arduo trabajo, como lo hemos visto toda la temporada de premios desde los Globos de Oro hasta los BAFTA.

Los mexicanos tendemos a creer que no brillamos lo suficiente y cuando alguno es exitoso no debemos colgarnos de su exito ya que solo es uno, yo digo, hay que sentirnos orgullosos de que uno de nosotros alcanza un éxito universal y recordar que el éxito llega a los que trabajan duro y los mexicanos estamos incluidos.

Gane o pierda, para mi, Alfonso Cuarón es una historia de triunfo que vale la pena compartir.

Mexican Flag Day

Happy Flag Day Mexico!

Today is Mexican's Flag Day, what does this mean exactly?

First, if you are lucky school is off, haha but more seriously, we honor a symbol that we feel proud of. It is customary in schools all around Mexico to honor our country every Monday morning very early before starting the school week, this is called "Honores a la Bandera" (Honouring the Flag), this includes raising of the flag, singing the national anthem, and saluting the flag. If there's a national holiday near there'll be a small reenactment or some sort of ceremony regarding that special event, these may be The Independence Day on September 16th, The Revolution Day on November 20th, The Constitution Day on February 5th, etc.

About the flag, the current flag has been officially in use since 1968 (some people believe it was re designed because Mexico was hosting the Olympic Games that same year) but the same emblem and similar design has been used since 1821. The main emblem everyone knows is the eagle in the middle, this comes from an aztec leyend, which says that the mexicas wandered for a long time, their god Huitzilopochtli told them to look for an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, the legend states that they were supposed to settle wherever they found it and after 200 years of search they settled and founded their Empire and the city of Tenochtitlan around the year 1325 (located in the center of Mexico, near Mexico City). The current design of the eagle was designed by Francisco Eppens Helguera in 1968.

Originally in 1821 the colors would represent the following: green: independence from Spain, white: the catholic religion or faith, and red: unity between americans and europeans. There's no official record of what the colors represent today but the most common interpretation to this day since the days of Ex-President Benito Juárez (around 1860-1870s) states that green represents hope, white unity and red the blood of our national heroes.

Flag day is on February 24th because that day in 1821 while fighting for our independence all fronts united officially declaring Mexico an independent nation.

So today is a day to be proud of being an independent Mexican! :)

¡Feliz Día de la Bandera México!

Hoy es Día de la Bandera, pero que significa esto exactamente?

Primero, si tienes suerte, no irás a la escuela, jaja pero más en serio honramos un símbolo patrio del que sentimos orgullo. Es costumbre en México hacer "Honores a la Bandera" todos los lunes en todas las escuelas del país, esto incluye izar la bandera, cantar el himno nacional y saludar a la bandera. Si hay algún día feriado cercano tal vez alguna presentación alusiva al tema, ya sea el Día de la Independencia el 16 de Septiembre, el Día de la Revolución el 20 de Noviembre o el Día de la Constitución, etc.

Juramento a la Bandera

Sobre la bandera, la bandera actual se usa oficialmente desde 1968 (algunas personas piensan que esto es porque se re diseñó con motivo de los Juegos Olímpicos celebrados en México ese año) pero el mismo emblema y diseño ha sido usado desde 1821. El emblema principal que todos conocemos es el águila en el centro, este proviene de la leyenda azteca que habla de como el dios Huitzilopochtli indicó a los mexicas buscar un águila en un nopal cazando una serpiente, y donde la encontrarán deberían construir su ciudad, después de 200 años de búsqueda fundaron su Imperio y la ciudad de Tenochtitlan alrededor del año 1325 (localizada en el centro del país cerca de la Ciudad de México). El diseño actual del águila fue hecho por Francisco Eppens Helguera en 1968.

Originalmente en 1821 los colores representaban lo siguiente: verde: independencia de España, blanco: la religión católica y rojo: unidad entre americanos y europeos. No hay un récord oficial que dicte el significado de cada color pero la interpretación más común al día de hoy desde los días de Benito Juárez (alrededor de los 1860-1870s) dice que el verde representa la esperanza, el blanco la unidad y el rojo la sangre de nuestros héroes nacionales.

El Día de la Bandera se celebra el 24 de Febrero porque este mismo día en 1821 peleando por nuestra independencia todos los frentes se unieron y declararon oficialmente a México una nación libre e independiente.

Así que hoy es el día de sentirse orgulloso de ser un mexicano libre e independiente! :)

My First Real Winter,... Beautiful, Cold, Icy, Frosty Winter

So, I'm I think on the second half of my first real snowy winter and I have to say it hasn't been THAT bad, mainly because I'm always inside, lucky me!

Seven Things to Expect on Your First Winter

1.- The sun sets really early. And I mean early, the first few weeks I felt like going to bed at 8 pm, so, yeah, be prepared to miss the sun for a while.

2.- Snow is quiet. I know this sounds a little dumb, but you can totally sleep through the night and wake up to a winter wonderland, my spring programmed brain took a while to understand this process. Rain and storms usually make rainy sounds that let you know everything will be wet in the morning, right?

3.- After certain temperatures cold is just cold. I know you think when you hear single digit temperatures (minus something if you use Celsius) of this horrible cold, but after a certain low it just feels cold.

4.- Snowed in days. School, work and life can literally freeze if snow wants it to happen, be ready to have a good TV show to watch or book to read, you are not going anywhere.

5.- Buried cars. And on that note, if you don't have a garage, make some extra time to dig up your car, or else, again, you are not going anywhere. And if you do have a garage, be prepared to plow your way out.

6.- Girls, never go out with wet hair. Unless you are looking forward to icy, easy to break hair, just don't! A blowdryer is a must have, must use item in the winter.

7.- Keep an eye on the pipes. It is important to keep the temperature of your house at lease at 60° F (15° C) or with a constant drip on the coldest days to keep them from freezing.

How to Keep Warm on Your First Real Winter

1.- Buy thermal underwear. Life saver, but for me not the most comfortable, I don't know why all women's thermal underwear is built like granny pants all the way to your waist, specially with our current low cut pants trend. Maybe I haven't found the "trendy thermal underwear" store. :/

2.- It's all about hats, gloves and scarfs. Cover your mouth if you don't want horrible cold air numbing your lungs, cover your ears if you don't want them to feel like they are going to fall off, this applies to hands and gloves too.

3.- Coffee, coffee, coffee. Or your hot beverage of preference. Warm tummy, warm body.

4.- Get a fleece blanket. They are cheap, easy to find and will keep you warm at night.

This has been a historic winter from what I hear from the news and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, so remember to be patient, keep safe if you need to drive somewhere or go outside, roads can get tricky, and as everyone says around here "stay warm".

Aquí estamos, en lo que parece la segunda mitad del invierno,  la verdad no me ha ido tan mal, principalmente porque casi no salgo, tengo suerte!

Siete Cosas que Esperar en Tu Primer Invierno

1.- Anochece muy temprano. Y digo temprano, las primeras semanas sentía que era hora de ir a dormir a las 8 de la noche, así que, prepárate para extrañar el sol por un rato.

2.- La nieve es silenciosa. Se que esto suena un poco tonto, pero puedes dormir toda la noche sin darte cuenta que esta nevando, y en la mañana te despiertas a un mundo de nieve, a mi cerebro programado a la eterna primavera le tomo un tiempo entender este proceso. La lluvia y tormentas hacen ruido y te dejan saber que al día siguiente todo estará mojado, cierto?

3.- Después de cierta temperatura el frío es sólo frío. Se que crees al escuchar temperaturas bajo cero (o de un dígito si acostumbras grados Fahrenheit) son igual a un frío insoportable, pero después de cierto dígito el frío solo se siente frío.

4.- Días de nieve. Escuelas, trabajo y en general la vida puede literalmente congelarse si la nieve quiere, prepárate con un buen programa de TV o un buen libro, no vas a ir a ningún lado.

5.- Coches enterrados en la nieve. Y continuando el punto anterior, si no tienes cochera has tiempo extra para desenterrar tu carro de la nieve, o reitero, no irás a ningún lado. Si tienes cochera, has tiempo para limpiar toda la nieve de tu entrada para poder salir.

6.- Mujeres, nunca salgan con el cabello mojado. A menos que quieras una cabellera congelada y fácil de quebrar, no lo hagas! Una secadora es indispensable en le invierno.

7.- Cuida las tuberías. Es importante mantener la temperatura del lugar donde vivas mínimo a 60°F (15°C) o con un goteo constante en los días más fríos para evitar que las tuberías se congelen.

Como Mantenerte Caliente en tu Primer Invierno

1.- Compra ropa interior térmica. Te salva la vida, para mi no es lo más cómoda, no se porqué toda la ropa térmica femenina llega hasta la cintura al mero estilo de las abuelas, con todos los pantalones a la cintura que ahora usamos. Tal vez no he encontrado la tienda de ropa térmica de moda.

2.- Gorros, guantes y bufandas. Cubre tu boca al salir para no inhalar aire frío que te entumirá los pulmones, usa un gorro que tape tus orejas con un gorro si no quieres sentir que se te congelan y caen, esto aplica también para las manos y los guantes.

3.- Café, café y más café. O tu bebida caliente favorita. Un estomago caliente es igual a menos frío.

4.- Ten a la mano una cobija de franela. Son baratas, fáciles de encontrar en cualquier tienda y te mantendrán cómodo en las noches.

Al parecer este invierno es histórico por lo que escucho en las noticias y no parece ir a ningún lado pronto así que recuerda ser paciente, mantener precauciones si necesitas manejar o salir, las calles son muy diferentes cuando hace frío, y como se acostumbra decir por aquí, mantente caliente.
