Where did you learn to speak English so well?

One of the first thing people ask after they meet me is where did I learn to speak English "so well", I quote-unquote because of course as my second language my English is not perfect.

Many Mexicans learn English in school and so did I, but I have to thank primarily my parents for it, because they went to the trouble of finding a bilingual private school for me and my siblings. So my English lessons started with my first English teacher "Miss Eloisa" 4 hours a day in first grade at the age of 6.

My dad would buy all the Disney movies he could find in his travels to the US in English, of course this was before DVDs, so as VHS videos didn't have subtitle options (Yes kids! I know! Unbelievable!) we had no choice but to listen and learn, the first movie I remember owning in English was The Lion King.

During my Elementary School years I learned listening through music, pronunciation by reading out loud to an American teacher that would make us repeat each word until we pronounced it perfectly, spelling by not smudging or crossing words on our tests, this meant writing perfectly each time or you would get the answer wrong, text books in English and so on. Most Mexican private schools will have English lessons at least one hour a day from elementary school all the way to college.

Note: I owned all these covers! :)

As I grew older movies, TV shows, magazines (specifically Teen Magazine during my awkward teenage years) and then the Internet kept me practicing and learning more about slang, phrasal verbs and idioms.

All of these little things later helped me get my Hospitality Management Bachelor in English and allowed me to work in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

So as many countries around the world, in Mexico, English is a big tool and asset to have when you become a professional adult and it is very common to find people that had English lessons and speak it very well, and others will understand it even if they are to shy to answer back in English.

What about you, do you speak different languages? Do you like learning? Do you feel shy talking in a language that's not your own? Leave a comment below!

Until next time!

Mexican Flag Day

Happy Flag Day Mexico!

Today is Mexican's Flag Day, what does this mean exactly?

First, if you are lucky school is off, haha but more seriously, we honor a symbol that we feel proud of. It is customary in schools all around Mexico to honor our country every Monday morning very early before starting the school week, this is called "Honores a la Bandera" (Honouring the Flag), this includes raising of the flag, singing the national anthem, and saluting the flag. If there's a national holiday near there'll be a small reenactment or some sort of ceremony regarding that special event, these may be The Independence Day on September 16th, The Revolution Day on November 20th, The Constitution Day on February 5th, etc.

Oath to the Flag
My best translation :)

About the flag, the current flag has been officially in use since 1968 (some people believe it was re designed because Mexico was hosting the Olympic Games that same year) but the same emblem and similar design has been used since 1821. The main emblem everyone knows is the eagle in the middle, this comes from an aztec leyend, which says that the mexicas wandered for a long time, their god Huitzilopochtli told them to look for an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, the legend states that they were supposed to settle wherever they found it and after 200 years of search they settled and founded their Empire and the city of Tenochtitlan around the year 1325 (located in the center of Mexico, near Mexico City). The current design of the eagle was designed by Francisco Eppens Helguera in 1968.

Originally in 1821 the colors would represent the following: green: independence from Spain, white: the catholic religion or faith, and red: unity between americans and europeans. There's no official record of what the colors represent today but the most common interpretation to this day since the days of Ex-President Benito Juárez (around 1860-1870s) states that green represents hope, white unity and red the blood of our national heroes.

Flag day is on February 24th because that day in 1821 while fighting for our independence all fronts united officially declaring Mexico an independent nation.

So today is a day to be proud of being an independent Mexican! :)

My First Real Winter,... Beautiful, Cold, Icy, Frosty Winter

Chesterfiel winters vs. Cuernavaca "winters" Chesterfiel 12 °F, Cuernavaca 81 °F

So, I'm I think on the second half of my first real snowy winter and I have to say it hasn't been THAT bad, mainly because I'm always inside, lucky me!

Seven Things to Expect on Your First Winter

1.- The sun sets really early. And I mean early, the first few weeks I felt like going to bed at 8 pm, so, yeah, be prepared to miss the sun for a while.

2.- Snow is quiet. I know this sounds a little dumb, but you can totally sleep through the night and wake up to a winter wonderland, my spring programmed brain took a while to understand this process. Rain and storms usually make rainy sounds that let you know everything will be wet in the morning, right?

3.- After certain temperatures cold is just cold. I know you think when you hear single digit temperatures (minus something if you use Celsius) of this horrible cold, but after a certain low it just feels cold.

4.- Snowed in days. School, work and life can literally freeze if snow wants it to happen, be ready to have a good TV show to watch or book to read, you are not going anywhere.

5.- Buried cars. And on that note, if you don't have a garage, make some extra time to dig up your car, or else, again, you are not going anywhere. And if you do have a garage, be prepared to plow your way out.

6.- Girls, never go out with wet hair. Unless you are looking forward to icy, easy to break hair, just don't! A blowdryer is a must have, must use item in the winter.

7.- Keep an eye on the pipes. It is important to keep the temperature of your house at lease at 60° F (15° C) or with a constant drip on the coldest days to keep them from freezing.

How to Keep Warm on Your First Real Winter

1.- Buy thermal underwear. Life saver, but for me not the most comfortable, I don't know why all women's thermal underwear is built like granny pants all the way to your waist, specially with our current low cut pants trend. Maybe I haven't found the "trendy thermal underwear" store. :/

2.- It's all about hats, gloves and scarfs. Cover your mouth if you don't want horrible cold air numbing your lungs, cover your ears if you don't want them to feel like they are going to fall off, this applies to hands and gloves too.

3.- Coffee, coffee, coffee. Or your hot beverage of preference. Warm tummy, warm body.

4.- Get a fleece blanket. They are cheap, easy to find and will keep you warm at night.

This has been a historic winter from what I hear from the news and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, so remember to be patient, keep safe if you need to drive somewhere or go outside, roads can get tricky, and as everyone says around here "stay warm".

Do you enjoy winter better? Summer? Are you better dealing with the hot or the cold? What are the things you like or hate about winter?

............................................................................................................................................................................................................

Back to Blogging

Pics taken from Tumblr.

So I'm back, after a much needed break, holidays, food, sight seeing, and family. I'm finally getting back to my regular routine.

The first post of the year sounds a little intimidating, should it reflect on the future and the possibilities of a New Year? Should it be about my resolutions and goals for this year? Or should I look back on 2013?

I've never been much of a resolution kind of person, I feel like resolutions start like a fun list of things you want to do and then become a stressful list of things that you wish you had time to do, until slowly some points in that list end up being things you wished you did.

I always reflect on the past year because I like to be grateful, and there's a ton of things I am grateful for on 2013. The biggest event for me was the reason why I'm sitting here blogging, moving to the US.

So hopefully I'll start sharing some of my experiences again soon, the top from this winter break for me: The Saint Louis Art Museum, visiting the Gateway Arch, experiencing one of the coldest winter days and snows, and our tour to the Budweiser Brewery Anheuser-Busch.

Also, I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to read this blog! One of my biggest goals for this year is discipline, so I hope that by the end of the year this blog if full of cool, interesting things to read.

Love,

PO

........................................................................................................................................................................

When the Leaves Start Turning Yellow

See them changing! Uh Oh! They are yellow already!
One of the very brand new things I get to experience fall. Coming from Cuernavaca "The City of Eternal Spring" we miss out on the season changing.

Always sunny, slightly cold in the winter, everything stays green, flowers keep blooming all year long and we have sunny days most of the year (unless it's rainy season).

My "Eternal Spring"
Now when the leaves start turning yellow I think of the undeniable fact that the winter and it's very cold days are coming my way. I panic as the trees turn more and more yellow and orange everyday because I know for a fact that I'll freeze.

So lucky to experience this!
I'll be the one awkwardly dressed in everything I own every time I go out, and I will definitely ignore the looks as long as I am warm, no matter how ridiculous my outfits get. For now I've been getting ready, I just bought my first ever set of thermal underwear. I found that the best store to stock on socks, sweaters, thermal underwear and coats (that I didn't have or need before) is Burlington, and maybe Ross. They have very cool brands at affordable prices, so if you need an entire winter wardrobe like me, they are your best bet.

Very very pretty colors!
Back to the fall, so far, I can say the season changing is super pretty to watch and it is definitely something everyone should experience at least once.

As warm days get shorter and the cooler days are more and more common I still enjoy as much sun as I can, taking it all in as if I'm savoring it to remember it for the next cold months.

Wish me luck!

...................................................................................................................................................................

Saying Hi and Greeting People

The first thing I found curious when I got here were the introductions and goodbyes.

Why?

In Mexico when people meet they shake hands or kiss on the cheek (depending on age, if it's work related or a social gathering). For example, the french kiss twice on the cheek (even men do it), and in French southern regions or small towns like Carpentras even three times!

On work related or formal situations Mexicans will shake hands, and on social gatherings guys get handshakes and us girls get kisses on the cheek, and if it's someone really close to us we'll even hug.

Here I've noticed a friendly smile and a "Hi!" or "Hey!" will be enough. If the greet/goodbye is really formal then you'll get a handshake. So I'm still feeling a little awkward at times because "something" is missing.

I guess I just need time to get used to it and eventually won't mind, for now I get confused and think to myself "Am I being polite enough?", "Did I acknowledge that person correctly?"

So, I'll keep on putting my best smile and "hi!" until then, one step at a time.

PO

..................................................................................................................................................................

About Me and Living in the Middle America

Hi!

My name is Paulina, I'm a 29 year old, I'm Mexican, raised in a town called Cuernavaca (45 minutes away from Mexico City). I come from a small but very loving family. I have a bachelor degree in Hospitality Managment and specialize in Catering and Event Planning.

I just moved to St. Louis MO with my boyfriend (he is american), so I decided to share things I find curious about living here with not just my family but anyone else that has found or will find themselves in my situation, moving to the famous Middle America.

This blog represents my new experiences as I adventure to a new country, caught between being amazed of the great advantages of living here and missing Mexico. I'll try to share the best I can my impressions and the subtle cultural differences we have. Because even though my country and the US are so close to each other (TV, magazines, internet) little things remind me I'm living in another country.

The main goal is trying to help other people moving here to not feel lonely, I hope I can insert some humor and keep it fresh and friendly to everyone and at the same time share tips from my experience hoping you'll find them useful.

Please keep in mind that I'm just appreciating cultural differences and will never mean to say one country is "better" than the other.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do sharing!
