I never thought this Cinco de Mayo post would be such a puzzle, there's so much to cover but really so little to say.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggky_sGpuFHVdRchei-FcAO2fpFHKP_5J1Boji3QpmFBdSzEqdfxPsEWEEBhf4vz0k8LjxJ21nKIOwErl_KXZsbNjoIrbScQImvLRMdCM-KAmPbOy-z2aAKL9ElUUDkjUETTnjdDiFO5s/s1600/cincodemayogooglert.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggky_sGpuFHVdRchei-FcAO2fpFHKP_5J1Boji3QpmFBdSzEqdfxPsEWEEBhf4vz0k8LjxJ21nKIOwErl_KXZsbNjoIrbScQImvLRMdCM-KAmPbOy-z2aAKL9ElUUDkjUETTnjdDiFO5s/s1600/cincodemayogooglert.jpg" height="260" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's a lot to say because there's tons of information around the web, around 95 million Google search results, most of what I found is pretty accurate but I also found tons of misinformation about it, as a Mexican this makes me feel I should try to shed some light and have a lot to say.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the same time I just want to be clear with the fact that, besides the city of Puebla in Mexico "Cinco de Mayo" is not always parades, parties, margaritas and piñatas. It's if you are lucky it's just a day off of work and school and not much more, other than that it's just business as usual.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>So what does Cinco de Mayo stand for and how did it become such a big deal in the US? </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On May 5th Mexico celebrates what is popularly called "La Batalla de Puebla" (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Puebla" target="_blank">Battle of Puebla</a>) that happened in 1862, when President Benito Juárez (which I mentioned on a previous post <a href="http://curiousmexicangirl.blogspot.com/2014/02/mexican-flag-day.html" target="_blank">here</a>) got in hot water with the French government lead by Napoleon III over an unpayable debt. This provoked a French invasion during which the biggest win for the Mexican army was the Battle of Puebla where they beat the most important army in the world at the time with half the men and lesser resources.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRjEDlHyxfavnXUAPXhTUDDgQOk7Wd8E6sFsfpcTsq_oIBSMBaWrRDaUk-uLq8VqRA0oZ5UGIOyB9DGko4fdgBOsdHXJBqrCvxZEGLStacTL5gDqia9zEniRLTZycLOKESSshWTx58Hhw/s1600/BatalladePuebla.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRjEDlHyxfavnXUAPXhTUDDgQOk7Wd8E6sFsfpcTsq_oIBSMBaWrRDaUk-uLq8VqRA0oZ5UGIOyB9DGko4fdgBOsdHXJBqrCvxZEGLStacTL5gDqia9zEniRLTZycLOKESSshWTx58Hhw/s1600/BatalladePuebla.jpg" height="640" width="590" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first records of this date getting popular in the US according to CNN and The History Channel (more <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/05/us/cinco-de-mayo-origins/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.history.com/topics/holidays/cinco-de-mayo" target="_blank">here</a>) goes back to the Civil War that was going on during the same years after the US helped the Mexican government with their French dilemma. That's when the Battle of Puebla became iconic as a big achievement, Mexican-American soldiers fighting for the Union found inspiration in it to keep going during their own battles as they fought for the same principles of freedom and democracy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Later during the 1960s the Chicano Civil Rights Movement brought new light to Cinco de Mayo while the US was going through it's share of change within it's society with different type of diversity issues which included the Latino and Mexican-American community.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQjMOOZYMRWT5gtKlDZmIDOc0jGsB8KeiY5FaLC_eNJU0T2EsiQ1Xv71aGjyUhgvqI7bZZ4Cp1N1DFHdSjeRY57ZI0SqNjddhbMaibEAcKCQIuS1tD2_RaA6ypOfJRV6y2Mejh157Uuok/s1600/IndependenceDayMexico.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQjMOOZYMRWT5gtKlDZmIDOc0jGsB8KeiY5FaLC_eNJU0T2EsiQ1Xv71aGjyUhgvqI7bZZ4Cp1N1DFHdSjeRY57ZI0SqNjddhbMaibEAcKCQIuS1tD2_RaA6ypOfJRV6y2Mejh157Uuok/s1600/IndependenceDayMexico.jpg" height="286" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mexican Independence Day</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the middle of all that here's my take, first of I feel like I should be super clear on this particular point: <b>the biggest celebration in Mexico is our Independence Day on September 16th, this celebration is full of parades, mariachi, tequila, food and parties. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now I do appreciate the fact that Cinco de Mayo represents the friendship and cultural acceptance of the Mexican community in the US and also today it has become a legitimate celebration to Mexican-Americans born in the US.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Just remember that in our country this date it's not what it appears to be.</b> So when you see all those Corona and Dos Equis ads keep in mind that as any other "holiday" there's a bunch of commercial opportunity behind them and they can get a little "stereotype-y" for my taste.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So whether you celebrate "Cinco de Mayo", "Drink'o de Mayo" or "Cinco de Drinko" keep it classy and respectful to your fellow Mexicans :). For me, it'll be just another day.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

One of the first thing people ask after they meet me is where did I learn to speak English "so well", I quote-unquote because of course as my second language my English is not perfect.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Many Mexicans learn English in school and so did I, but I have to thank primarily my parents for it, because they went to the trouble of finding a bilingual private school for me and my siblings. So my English lessons started with my first English teacher "Miss Eloisa" 4 hours a day in first grade at the age of 6.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
My dad would buy all the Disney movies he could find in his travels to the US in English, of course this was before DVDs, so as VHS videos didn't have subtitle options (Yes kids! I know! Unbelievable!) we had no choice but to listen and learn, the first movie I remember owning in English was The Lion King.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During my Elementary School years I learned listening through music, pronunciation by reading out loud to an American teacher that would make us repeat each word until we pronounced it perfectly, spelling by not smudging or crossing words on our tests, this meant writing perfectly each time or you would get the answer wrong, text books in English and so on. Most Mexican private schools will have English lessons at least one hour a day from elementary school all the way to college.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Note: I owned all these covers! :)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I grew older movies, TV shows, magazines (specifically Teen Magazine during my awkward teenage years) and then the Internet kept me practicing and learning more about slang, phrasal verbs and idioms.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All of these little things later helped me get my Hospitality Management Bachelor in English and allowed me to work in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So as many countries around the world, in Mexico, English is a big tool and asset to have when you become a professional adult and it is very common to find people that had English lessons and speak it very well, and others will understand it even if they are to shy to answer back in English.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Que tal ustedes? Hablan diferentes idiomas?

I'm not super knowledgeable about the Mexican film industry because in all honesty I'm not a big fan, but I got to say every Mexican that thrives, succeeds and opens doors for others to follow is worth some admiration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here's what I've learned so far about the much talked Mr. Cuarón, he was born Alfonso Cuarón Orozco in November 28th, 1961 in Mexico City. He's a producer, writer, screen editor and very successful film director. It comes as no surprise that he could win an Oscar tonight since he's worked with stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke and Robert DeNiro.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Los Hijos de Los Hombres (2006) con Julianne Moore y Clive Owen, recibiendo otra nominación al Oscar para Mejor Escritor y Mejor Edición.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Today is Mexican's Flag Day, what does this mean exactly?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First, if you are lucky school is off, haha but more seriously, we honor a symbol that we feel proud of. It is customary in schools all around Mexico to honor our country every Monday morning very early before starting the school week, this is called "Honores a la Bandera" (Honouring the Flag), this includes raising of the flag, singing the national anthem, and saluting the flag. If there's a national holiday near there'll be a small reenactment or some sort of ceremony regarding that special event, these may be The Independence Day on September 16th, The Revolution Day on November 20th, The Constitution Day on February 5th, etc.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #e06666; font-size: large;">Oath to the Flag</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My best translation :)</td></tr>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
About the flag, the current flag has been officially in use since 1968 (some people believe it was re designed because Mexico was hosting the Olympic Games that same year) but the same emblem and similar design has been used since 1821. The main emblem everyone knows is the eagle in the middle, this comes from an aztec leyend, which says that the mexicas wandered for a long time, their god Huitzilopochtli told them to look for an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, the legend states that they were supposed to settle wherever they found it and after 200 years of search they settled and founded their Empire and the city of Tenochtitlan around the year 1325 (located in the center of Mexico, near Mexico City). The current design of the eagle was designed by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Eppens_Helguera" target="_blank">Francisco Eppens Helguera</a> in 1968.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Originally in 1821 the colors would represent the following: green: independence from Spain, white: the catholic religion or faith, and red: unity between americans and europeans. There's no official record of what the colors represent today but the most common interpretation to this day since the days of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benito_Ju%C3%A1rez" target="_blank">Ex-President Benito Juárez</a> (around 1860-1870s) states that green represents hope, white unity and red the blood of our national heroes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Flag day is on February 24th because that day in 1821 while fighting for our independence all fronts united officially declaring Mexico an independent nation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So today is a day to be proud of being an independent Mexican! :)</div>

¡Feliz Día de la Bandera México!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #e06666; font-size: large;">Juramento a la Bandera</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
:)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, I'm I think on the second half of my first real snowy winter and I have to say it hasn't been THAT bad, mainly because I'm always inside, lucky me!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">Seven Things to Expect on Your First Winter</span></b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">1.- The sun sets really early.</span></b> And I mean early, the first few weeks I felt like going to bed at 8 pm, so, yeah, be prepared to miss the sun for a while.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e06666;"><b>2.- Snow is quiet</b>. </span>I know this sounds a little dumb, but you can totally sleep through the night and wake up to a winter wonderland, my spring programmed brain took a while to understand this process. Rain and storms usually make rainy sounds that let you know everything will be wet in the morning, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">3.- After certain temperatures cold is just cold.</span></b> I know you think when you hear single digit temperatures (minus something if you use Celsius) of this horrible cold, but after a certain low it just feels cold.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">4.- Snowed in days.</span></b> School, work and life can literally freeze if snow wants it to happen, be ready to have a good TV show to watch or book to read, you are not going anywhere.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">5.- Buried cars.</span></b> And on that note, if you don't have a garage, make some extra time to dig up your car, or else, again, you are not going anywhere. And if you do have a garage, be prepared to plow your way out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">6.- Girls, never go out with wet hair.</span></b> Unless you are looking forward to icy, easy to break hair, just don't! A blowdryer is a must have, must use item in the winter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">7.- Keep an eye on the pipes.</span></b> It is important to keep the temperature of your house at lease at 60° F (15° C) or with a constant drip on the coldest days to keep them from freezing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<b><span style="color: #e06666;">How to Keep Warm on Your First Real Winter</span></b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e06666;"><b>1.- Buy thermal underwear</b>.</span> Life saver, but for me not the most comfortable, I don't know why all women's thermal underwear is built like granny pants all the way to your waist, specially with our current low cut pants trend. Maybe I haven't found the "trendy thermal underwear" store. :/</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">2.- It's all about hats, gloves and scarfs</span>.</b> Cover your mouth if you don't want horrible cold air numbing your lungs, cover your ears if you don't want them to feel like they are going to fall off, this applies to hands and gloves too.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">3.- Coffee, coffee, coffee.</span></b> Or your hot beverage of preference. Warm tummy, warm body.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">4.- Get a fleece blanket.</span></b> They are cheap, easy to find and will keep you warm at night.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This has been a historic winter from what I hear from the news and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, so remember to be patient, keep safe if you need to drive somewhere or go outside, roads can get tricky, and as everyone says around here "stay warm".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Do you enjoy winter better? Summer? Are you better dealing with the hot or the cold? What are the things you like or hate about winter?</div>

............................................................................................................................................................................................................<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">Siete Cosas que Esperar en Tu Primer Invierno</span></b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">Como Mantenerte Caliente en tu Primer Invierno</span></b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello hello!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So a very cold cold day of early January we decided to take my sister who was visiting to the <a href="http://anheuser-busch.com/" target="_blank">Anheuser-Busch Brewery</a> here in St. Louis. They are famous for producing Budweiser beer. They are the base for the 12 breweries they operate all over the US.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9WlzpAb6Y9JsvljuWE2GVqICyOCfYIy88C-lPLM1wqx_ND-aTx13R-9NuO9AdiaLZDv7ijIOQcHH4n5A10pAQyC8G8FjNCO9_YedFu1u5qIJW3v0YRJJzpmh5HHZuhjkz6Wug2unikDA/s1600/budweiserplant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9WlzpAb6Y9JsvljuWE2GVqICyOCfYIy88C-lPLM1wqx_ND-aTx13R-9NuO9AdiaLZDv7ijIOQcHH4n5A10pAQyC8G8FjNCO9_YedFu1u5qIJW3v0YRJJzpmh5HHZuhjkz6Wug2unikDA/s1600/budweiserplant.jpg" height="236" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are some little facts about them:</div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">They named their beer Budweiser so it would have a German ring to it, but it was easy to pronounce in English.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">During the prohibition they didn't sell alcohol but sold every ingredient to "do it yourself", hmmm... suspicious?</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">The original owner used to own a soap factory.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Adolphus Busch was the first American brewer to use </span>pasteurization<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"> to keep beer fresh (even before milk!), the first to use mechanical </span>refrigeration<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"> and </span>refrigerated railroad cars<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"> and the first to bottle beer extensively.</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">The </span>St. Louis Cardinals<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"> </span>major league<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"> baseball club was owned by Anheuser-Busch from February 20, 1953 to March 21, 1996.</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">They share their history and facilities with all their visitors, the tour is free and if you are lucky or crazy like us and go in the middle of the winter the groups are small and you get almost a private tour!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">We got to taste two beers at the end of the tour, I chose Budweiser, you can't go wrong with a classic, and their Shock Top Honey Crips AppleWheat, too fruity for me! but if you are gonna try, might as well try something new!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">If you ask me, nothing compares to Mexican beer (I'm so biased! lol) still I had a great time, delicious beer and got to take some amazing pictures of the brewery all snowed! It was worth the drive and the cold!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"><br /></span></div>

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/cermexza" target="_blank">Cermexza</a> are now all over Mexico with a great project, giving Mexican craft beers a chance to showcase their work, with all this "beer boom" we are living nowadays it is definitely worth following their site and getting to know all the talented brewmasters that are starting just like Anheuser Busch did back in 1852.</div>

And for my favorite international beer, </span><a href="http://carlsberg.com/flash.html" style="text-align: justify;" target="_blank">Carlsberg</a><span style="text-align: justify;"> is my beer of choice! <div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hola hola!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aquí algunos datos curiosos sobre ellos:</div>
<div>
<ul>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"></span><br />
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 19.200000762939453px;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I'm back, after a much needed break, holidays, food, sight seeing, and family. I'm finally getting back to my regular routine.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first post of the year sounds a little intimidating, should it reflect on the future and the possibilities of a New Year? Should it be about my resolutions and goals for this year? Or should I look back on 2013?</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've never been much of a resolution kind of person, I feel like resolutions start like a fun list of things you want to do and then become a stressful list of things that you wish you had time to do, until slowly some points in that list end up being things you wished you did. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I always reflect on the past year because I like to be grateful, and there's a ton of things I am grateful for on 2013. The biggest event for me was the reason why I'm sitting here blogging, moving to the US.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDTQxgY16ISU24IwNkWn0znfjsR2DRNGalksZXoxVotvCNjnSzBK2OltwA3-8f6ad0KwsrSONIUPwy7heo51Af9VYNiR8WBP8Ll69jBWR21IdYOKA-pK_3z7afQCws5QWTFw3MzWIF9QI/s1600/january2014tranquil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDTQxgY16ISU24IwNkWn0znfjsR2DRNGalksZXoxVotvCNjnSzBK2OltwA3-8f6ad0KwsrSONIUPwy7heo51Af9VYNiR8WBP8Ll69jBWR21IdYOKA-pK_3z7afQCws5QWTFw3MzWIF9QI/s640/january2014tranquil.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So hopefully I'll start sharing some of my experiences again soon, the top from this winter break for me: <a href="http://www.slam.org/" target="_blank">The Saint Louis Art Museum</a>, visiting the <a href="http://www.gatewayarch.com/" target="_blank">Gateway Arch</a>, experiencing one of the coldest winter days and snows, and our tour to the <a href="http://anheuser-busch.com/" target="_blank">Budweiser Brewery Anheuser-Busch</a>.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to read this blog! One of my biggest goals for this year is discipline, so I hope that by the end of the year this blog if full of cool, interesting things to read.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Con mucho cariño,</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, I didn't blog last week, but I have a perfectly good reason. I was doing grocery shopping lists, cooking and cooking some more.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are a few things I already knew about Thanksgiving, general stuff, it's celebrated the 4th Thursday of November, you eat turkey, potatoes & cranberry sauce, football is on, and generally from movies and TV someone always has a break down while cooking tons of food. The little history I knew was that pilgrims where involved, and obviously the whole point of the spirit and big significance of gratefulness.What I didn't know is that it was related to Harvest Festivals, which makes sense because you eat the whole harvest in one sitting! :P</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wasn't a complete stranger to turkey, because in Mexico it is costumary to eat turkey on Christmas Eve, more on that when the date gets closer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, I started cooking on Tuesday, little things here and there and by Thursday morning I had a whole game plan set, I was not looking forward to a cooking meltdown.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For being all young people in our 20s I gotta say it was a success, considering we didn't have the supervision of a responsible adult, which I guess it means we are all turning into responsible adults ourselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My firsts:</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">I've never had cranberry sauce before, I liked it!</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Never cooked a turkey before, I was super nervous because I didn't want to ruin Thanksgiving, it turned out OK :) (editor's note: boyfriend said it turned out amazing, I don't want to brag)</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">I've never used those pre-made rolls, they are super handy! </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other Thanksgiving facts I didn't know about:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Abraham Lincoln was the first president that made it the same National day for all of the US.</li>
<li>"Dinner" is served around 1 pm, this was a big surprise to me, I always thought it was a night "dinner party" thing. I served it at 5 pm anyway because I didn't feel like cooking since dawn, also it gave time for our close friends to come and hang out.</li>
<li>Cooking a turkey is not as hard as I thought, I was intimidated by the size, I think.</li>
<li>American stuffing is different from Mexican stuffing, for Mexican stuffing we use ground beef, I had no idea it was made of bread.</li>
<li>Football WILL be on TV all day long, and there's no way of changing that (specially in a family of all boys).</li>
<li>Cyber Monday! Cyber Monday! Cyber Monday! Got all the Christmas gifts ready with just a few clicks.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In general, I think it was a great week, I had tons of fun cooking and sharing with our loved ones.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What am I thankful for? Tons of things, but for this special occasion I guess I'd start with a "full of food" table & loving, fun people to share it with.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Until next week!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBI7xLToD0dI_jgr_oJ3B_dCzE_Y2M9EpxZ8i43tKJOSjPEoxsvcp2C-HNc6tNkJxPTexuihKtYdGIGavOcQSnarzGvR0FKV7Hyt0y5HyRnX_5QptBmkbmIc0ombhpcaHG0EpFo0rfsfI/s1600/pumpkin+pie+slice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBI7xLToD0dI_jgr_oJ3B_dCzE_Y2M9EpxZ8i43tKJOSjPEoxsvcp2C-HNc6tNkJxPTexuihKtYdGIGavOcQSnarzGvR0FKV7Hyt0y5HyRnX_5QptBmkbmIc0ombhpcaHG0EpFo0rfsfI/s400/pumpkin+pie+slice.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
:P</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mis experiencias nuevas:</div>
<br />
<ul>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Cyber Monday! </li>
</ol>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hasta la próxima semana!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hi! as promised, this week is pumpkin pie week, in time for Thanksgiving next Thursday. Before talking about <u>my first pumpkin pie</u>, I'll finish telling you about my adventure at the <a href="http://www.eckerts.com/grafton.htm" target="_blank">Eckert's Grafton Farm</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The tractor that drives you around was unexpected, I would have happily walked all over the place just because the distances are not a big deal, I think it's just part of the experience, and a great one.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi238-sP-cc_nei7A5h5fLoZzJubJAYXGJcADixJLtGJ-h1Y7mGyZZGjqTr_-jGb8-tYEEHChvQvXtCFV-EpUHCcpptnsS2Hlv0v4v4o7keEsLDHp_iZx5Wya55JtqF1WaKISG-n87sYDo/s1600/eckerts+pumpkins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi238-sP-cc_nei7A5h5fLoZzJubJAYXGJcADixJLtGJ-h1Y7mGyZZGjqTr_-jGb8-tYEEHChvQvXtCFV-EpUHCcpptnsS2Hlv0v4v4o7keEsLDHp_iZx5Wya55JtqF1WaKISG-n87sYDo/s640/eckerts+pumpkins.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've never seen a pumpkin patch before, I only heard about it from Linus every Halloween when he faithfully waits for the Great Pumpkin at the pumpkin patch. I got all excited as a kid, and didn't lose the chance to take pics. I was also blown away with all the different kinds of pumpkin they had, all sizes, shapes and colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As for the picking, we picked an 11 pound beautiful pumpkin that I grew fond of over the days and weeks that "she" hung out with us, losing it's green patches and getting ripe.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We chose to take it home because it looked "small" in comparison with the others, let me tell you, not small at all. I'll always remember you "first pumpkin" :').</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_xH0LzK2ed3m5BE8yRGS9pFDo9cD9MbqeICFRndRQ5rsRPRDJYdaiyIVwA_sI6Tyfr0HD93lzT_HbwhXkcpqcm1H9I-NMapdolXHrNmIYH3bz_6Eiain-3XJIHYnvhTGIJDA5-9_3-Aw/s1600/beautiful+pumpkin+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_xH0LzK2ed3m5BE8yRGS9pFDo9cD9MbqeICFRndRQ5rsRPRDJYdaiyIVwA_sI6Tyfr0HD93lzT_HbwhXkcpqcm1H9I-NMapdolXHrNmIYH3bz_6Eiain-3XJIHYnvhTGIJDA5-9_3-Aw/s640/beautiful+pumpkin+.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When it was finally ripe I googled how to roast it to make some pumpkin puree and learned that the ideal type to use for pies is the "sweet pumpkin". After researching I just went with my gut because some people all over the web actually had success with a pumpkin like mine.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I found <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIbFVOp-OMA" target="_blank">this amazing video</a> on youtube from a channel called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/ChefTips?feature=watch" target="_blank">Chef Tips</a>. Just follow the directions and you'll be fine. If you have extra pumpkin puree you can freeze it. (btw, the Chef has a delicious<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mjw3A5hL9uY&list=WLyLBL8zHptaBmZmb7eaJWLNXP12O_Y8wX" target="_blank"> pumpkin bread recipe</a> that'll I'll try with the extra pumpkin puree I have). This can be a little time consuming so be prepared, I did it a few days in advanced. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then for the baking pie part I followed <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ5VJNJNfSQ&list=WLyLBL8zHptaBmZmb7eaJWLNXP12O_Y8wX" target="_blank">this also amazing video</a> from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/foodwishes?feature=watch" target="_blank">Food Whishes</a>, I did it step by step with amazing results. The only ingredient I didn't find or use was the Chinese 5-spice and instead of the pumpkin can I used 2 cups of my pumpkin puree.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRyvVJaItzISegdwp4QOU6-PRy8H2PdQJVhlMbQxLyfOBB8JfR8rknjM3EXU35cepe6ZxLrZi4U1QtskI8kw6nYxMDd-TPRCpeafxDKqm0cdfbqdTgcOZfUU9xKXLe0rmYeue0WqKd29U/s1600/pumpkin+pie+recipe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRyvVJaItzISegdwp4QOU6-PRy8H2PdQJVhlMbQxLyfOBB8JfR8rknjM3EXU35cepe6ZxLrZi4U1QtskI8kw6nYxMDd-TPRCpeafxDKqm0cdfbqdTgcOZfUU9xKXLe0rmYeue0WqKd29U/s640/pumpkin+pie+recipe.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few tips:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. I used pre-grounded nutmeg just because I use it a lot and rather have it ready, it's fine :) if you are a little more gourmet it's definitely way better if you ground it fresh.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. I used half of the dough recipe from my apple pie of last week, just check the <a href="http://curiousmexicangirl.blogspot.com/2013/11/apple-picking-and-grandma-oviedos-apple.html" target="_blank">previous post</a>, remember, just half!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. I used a foil 9 inch pie pan, I couldn't really tap the pie or move it easily because the pumpkin mix is "liquidy" and heavy, I needed help to put it in the oven, if you have a glass pie pan it will be much better and easier to handle. If not, just remember to be careful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. And finally, it's a little hard to tell when the pie is done, when you are getting close to taking it out of the oven just give it a gentle wiggle and the center should be "wiggly" but not liquid, just go with your instincts. I didn't want to mark it with a knife but I wasn't really sure so I used a toothpick like an 1 1/2 inch from the edge, if it comes out clean, it's done! :) I usually turn off the oven and let stuff cool in it for a little bit in there and then pull them out, so they don't get a temperature shock. The pumpkin mix might be a little puffy and will eventually go down when the pie cools off.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">We never waste in this household! I had enough dough and mix for two baby pies :)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let it chill in the fridge for a night and it'll be ready to eat the next day!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hope you give it a try for Thanksgiving, (I will definitely be making it next week) it was a quick and easy one to bake and I had delicious results.</div>

Calabazas!
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hola!
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Algunos tips:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Usé nuez moscada previamente molida, si quieren algo mas gourmet pueden molerla al momento.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few weeks ago I went apple picking, a very common activity here when it's fall, it was definitely a new experience, the funniest part, I think I was the only adult there that had never done it before. Even little kids knew better than me what they were doing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We went to<a href="http://www.eckerts.com/grafton.htm" target="_blank"> Eckert's Grafton Farm</a>, we were lucky enough to enjoy nice weather, the country feel of the place was beautiful, the drive there was an adventure by itself, rivers, bald eagles and farms.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once we started picking apples I was so worried I'd end up with pounds of apples and not know what to do with them, they are worth using for baking and cooking.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I decided to bake my grandma Oviedo's apple pie recipe, my mom bakes me this pie instead of cake every year for my birthday, that's how much I love it!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was intimidated at first because my grandma was a great cook (Julia Child style!). My mom that knows all her tips and tricks sent me the recipe with extra help here and there. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e06666;">Ingredients</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4 medium sized apples (<u>tip no. 1: green apples work the best for apple pie</u>)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 cups of flour</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4 tablespoons of cold water</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 margarine sticks (room temperature)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 pinch of salt</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3/4 cup of sugar <u>(tip no. 2: or less depending on how sweet you want your pie, I used a little less</u>)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Grounded cinnamon to taste (around 1/2 tablespoon)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4 or 5 squares of butter</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 egg</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a bowl mix the flour with the salt and the margarine sticks (one at a time). When is well mixed add the iced water and mix until everything looks even, at this point you can use your hand, (<u>tip no. 3: don't over do it because your hand will warm up the margarine and it'll make the mix hard to handle</u>).When ready chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrcs7D5paqFv-wt1yKR5zg-w_hZv0btP6ivufRf4Dbhe9-06Rp0dk_18SLubiRIOiyGmAjFxK5RYizda-wmbLzaXm8oh5cPX95wnzbMSYkOmXrOHZ3KyKqfvCZXnZSFNyXo64sFPgdsoA/s1600/apple+pie+by+steps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrcs7D5paqFv-wt1yKR5zg-w_hZv0btP6ivufRf4Dbhe9-06Rp0dk_18SLubiRIOiyGmAjFxK5RYizda-wmbLzaXm8oh5cPX95wnzbMSYkOmXrOHZ3KyKqfvCZXnZSFNyXo64sFPgdsoA/s320/apple+pie+by+steps.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, peel the apples and slice them (<u>tip no. 4: not too thin</u>) and put them on water with a splash of lime to keep them from turning brown.Then put half of the dough on the mold and pinch it with a fork so when it's baking it breathes, and cover with the apple slices <u>(tip no. 5: dry them before putting them on the mold, if they are too moist they'll make your crust soggy</u>). Sprinkle them with sugar and cinnamon, spread the butter squares on top (I forgot to do this :( but my pie still turned out great).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
Cover the crust with the rest of the dough and also pinch it with a fork. Glaze with the egg so it gets brown and crispy. Then cook in a preheated oven for around 40-45 minutes at 425° F (220° C).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let it chill if you don't want the slices to crumble (we couldn't wait) and enjoy!</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #e06666;">Ingredientes</span><br />
1 huevo<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A disfrutar!<br />
<br />

One of the very brand new things I get to experience fall. Coming from Cuernavaca "The City of Eternal Spring" we miss out on the season changing.<br />
<br />
Always sunny, slightly cold in the winter, everything stays green, flowers keep blooming all year long and we have sunny days most of the year (unless it's rainy season).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUcwEi5H0Ja8wXY95xgcQH6A6HFXwJGW7rghD-IhmTqUnEThrCXZxNx3j_1qnqai3nxkna0X1kmIyjV7Tb6kXtZtyLKdCGIrvBcwAAWIrymZlkUD2fJ9Yb_xZ7pGr7AA6EbW_06n0npxs/s1600/mexico+nature+landscape+2013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUcwEi5H0Ja8wXY95xgcQH6A6HFXwJGW7rghD-IhmTqUnEThrCXZxNx3j_1qnqai3nxkna0X1kmIyjV7Tb6kXtZtyLKdCGIrvBcwAAWIrymZlkUD2fJ9Yb_xZ7pGr7AA6EbW_06n0npxs/s640/mexico+nature+landscape+2013.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>

Now when the leaves start turning yellow I think of the undeniable fact that the winter and it's very cold days are coming my way. I panic as the trees turn more and more yellow and orange everyday because I know for a fact that I'll freeze.<br />

I'll be the one awkwardly dressed in everything I own every time I go out, and I will definitely ignore the looks as long as I am warm, no matter how ridiculous my outfits get. For now I've been getting ready, I just bought my first ever set of thermal underwear. I found that the best store to stock on socks, sweaters, thermal underwear and coats (that I didn't have or need before) is <a href="http://es.burlingtoncoatfactory.com/burlingtoncoatfactory/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Burlington</a>, and maybe <a href="http://www.rossstores.com/" target="_blank">Ross</a>. They have very cool brands at affordable prices, so if you need an entire winter wardrobe like me, they are your best bet.<br />

Back to the fall, so far, I can say the season changing is super pretty to watch and it is definitely something everyone should experience at least once.<br />
<br />
As warm days get shorter and the cooler days are more and more common I still enjoy as much sun as I can, taking it all in as if I'm savoring it to remember it for the next cold months.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Deséenme suerte!<br />

<br />
Sometimes Mexicans are known for their warmth and friendly disposition. I got a reminder of this the other day in a very strange way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCrLKayqi8hGvTyJNYkP20elkNYoxcnoW5o6190obqmYs8-qQXU_0ZvhSor-wFwxdJzv03ZlsKKptB-sLnosNxI9PULbGlPY83GfDhMujULsLC1u6FOD6DGkOLlBCYQyyigpYlPsFKx8k/s1600/mexican+car.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCrLKayqi8hGvTyJNYkP20elkNYoxcnoW5o6190obqmYs8-qQXU_0ZvhSor-wFwxdJzv03ZlsKKptB-sLnosNxI9PULbGlPY83GfDhMujULsLC1u6FOD6DGkOLlBCYQyyigpYlPsFKx8k/s640/mexican+car.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Our car needed to be jump started because it ran out of battery (boyfriend left the stereo on trying to fix it :/ ) we called his brothers and of course they came to the rescue, luckily they live close enough and football wasn't on TV.<br />
<br />
While we sat outside waiting with the car's hood open one of our neighbors got home, he asked what happened and was polite, gave us "advice" on the battery (which boyfriend already knew) wished us luck and went on his way. Like a reflex I thought "that was it?"<br />
<br />
Suddenly it came to my mind that back home any neighbor or sometimes a stranger will lend you a hand, and won't rest until they make sure you are set, sometimes you don't even ask for help, you are in an awkward situation where you are letting a stranger help you because it's what you do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7RNy9X9-fDxvDmnTbri8qTskPKIfCQkLVTjSaCNITWsDZAUSbJLCH9jy2bFlSYVJ9Qzl66AxYUcn7YOaArgCrBw5MrL7hTCOSS5nshD0aizhCBz0zY8CilUbPgXsMd7HDcsbfqE3nXVQ/s1600/mexicanblognewspaper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7RNy9X9-fDxvDmnTbri8qTskPKIfCQkLVTjSaCNITWsDZAUSbJLCH9jy2bFlSYVJ9Qzl66AxYUcn7YOaArgCrBw5MrL7hTCOSS5nshD0aizhCBz0zY8CilUbPgXsMd7HDcsbfqE3nXVQ/s640/mexicanblognewspaper.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On the other hand, the nice lady that lives across the hall went on a trip, she is going to be away for 2 whole weeks, she was kind enough to knock on our door, let us know when she gets back and even offered us her morning paper (I'm kind of guessing we are just cleaning it up lol). I have to say she has been a very nice neighbor so far. I was so surprised she knocked on the door to let us know she was going away I didn't even ask where she was going :( , which was boyfriend's first question when I told him.<br />
<br />
In Mexico unless you are super close to your neighbor it's not common to let them know your whereabouts, when we go somewhere for a while, we are just gone!<br />
.<br />
I guess we just have different ways to show our friendliness.<br />
<br />
No matter where you are there's a saying I heard once that I think it's very true "good neighbor, good friend". Usually the people that know how to get along with others around them turn out to be good at being friends.<br />

<br />
Buen Vecino, Buen Amigo<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Why?<br />
<br />
In Mexico when people meet they shake hands or kiss on the cheek (depending on age, if it's work related or a social gathering). For example, the french kiss twice on the cheek (even men do it), and in French southern regions or small towns like Carpentras even three times!<br />
<br />
On work related or formal situations Mexicans will shake hands, and on social gatherings guys get handshakes and us girls get kisses on the cheek, and if it's someone really close to us we'll even hug.<br />
<br />
Here I've noticed a friendly smile and a "Hi!" or "Hey!" will be enough. If the greet/goodbye is really formal then you'll get a handshake. So I'm still feeling a little awkward at times because "something" is missing.<br />
<br />
I guess I just need time to get used to it and eventually won't mind, for now I get confused and think to myself "Am I being polite enough?", "Did I acknowledge that person correctly?"<br />
<br />
So, I'll keep on putting my best smile and "hi!" until then, one step at a time.<br />
<br />
PO<br />
<br />
..................................................................................................................................................................<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Por qué?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

Hi!<br />
<br />
My name is Paulina, I'm a 29 year old, I'm Mexican, raised in a town called Cuernavaca (45 minutes away from Mexico City). I come from a small but very loving family. I have a bachelor degree in Hospitality Managment and specialize in Catering and Event Planning.<br />

<br />
I just moved to St. Louis MO with my boyfriend (he is american), so I decided to share things I find curious about living here with not just my family but anyone else that has found or will find themselves in my situation, moving to the famous Middle America.<br />
<br />

<br />
This blog represents my new experiences as I adventure to a new country, caught between being amazed of the great advantages of living here and missing Mexico. I'll try to share the best I can my impressions and the subtle cultural differences we have. Because even<span style="background-color: white;"> though my country a</span>nd the US are so close to each other (TV, magazines, internet) little things remind me I'm living in another country.<br />
<br />
The main goal is trying to help other people moving here to not feel lonely, I hope I can insert some humor and keep it fresh and friendly to everyone and at the same time share tips from my experience hoping you'll find them useful.<br />
